Hawaiʻi Web GIS

Demonstration 01

Changing basemaps

The same county data sits on top of whichever basemap you choose. A basemap sets the visual context — terrain, satellite imagery, or a plain street grid — without touching the data drawn over it.

County overlay: 2020 U.S. Census, Hawaiʻi Statewide GIS Program (public domain).

Try each basemap: the coral county outlines stay put while the world beneath them changes. That separation — data layer versus basemap — is the foundation of every web map.
